Birmingham Book Festival - European Writers' Tour 2017

Portuguese writer Dulce Maria Cardoso spent her childhood in Angola and returned to Portugal following the Angolan War of Independence in 1975.

Joined by her translator Ángel Gurría-Quintana she will talk with European Literature Champion Rosie Goldsmith about her novel The Return which tells the story of a young boy’s return to Portugal, after growing up in Angola, trying to find his identity and a place he feels is home.

Dulce Maria Cardoso

Dulce Maria Cardoso is a Portuguese writer, who spent her childhood in Luanda, Angola after her parents moved there when she was an infant. Her family returned to Portugal following the Angolan civil war of independence in 1975. She studied Law at the University of Lisbon and worked as a lawyer before becoming a full-time writer. Her maiden novel ‘Campo de Sangue’ published in 2001 won the Grand Prize Acontece. Her second novel ‘Os Meus Sentimentos’ (2005) won the EU Prize for Literature and ‘O Chão dos Pardais’ won the Portuguese PEN Club Award and the Ciranda Award. Her fourth novel, The Return, was published in 2011. Her latest book is ‘Tudo São Histórias de Amor’ (2014). Cardoso’s works have been published in France, Spain, Argentina, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Brazil.
